In the kitchen one day. Mike was throwing away yellowed rice which he just steamed.

Me: What are you doing?
Mike:  Throwing away the rice. I don’t know why I steamed it and it turned yellow.
Me: Oh, isn’t there a term for that effect? When sugar is browned?
Mike: Yeah, it’s called chow tah.

    haha, i realised that the effect i was trying to think of is actually called the Maillard effect – i know, im a terrible geek. (:
